PostHeaderIcon Has Warren Buffet invested in/bought network marketing companies?

which ones? and does he still own them?

Check the website for more up to the minute information

www.berkshirehathaway.com

No.

but he did buy a stake in a mobile home manufacturer and a mobile home park!

No, he never bought even a single share of Microsoft, even tough he's a good friend of Bill Gates.

He mostly invests in consumer products like: Coca-Cola, Gillette, Procter&Gamble.

He only buys companies that will be around in the next 30 years, despite recessions, or scientific developments.

PostHeaderIcon How do investment partnerships work?

I was wandering how investment partnerships like the ones that Warren Buffet owned at the beginning of his career worked. what is the basic structure of the partnership? How does he get money?

Also, they say partnerships pay in ratios like 2/20 where the general partner gets a 2% monthly fee or something like that and then 20% of the profit. Does that mean he gets 20% every time he sells a share, or when he liquidates the partnership?

As you can see, I am new to the subject. Please give a lot of detail.

PostHeaderIcon How do you keep up with the portfolio of warren buffet, george soros, etc?

I have seen sites that track these great investors portfolios. are they able to see what their holdings, buys, sells are any more frequently than on a quarterly basis when it is reported? Is there another way to find this information? If there is, what is the original source of the data. Thanks.

The reason you can see the info at all is that it is a mandated disclosure. However, these investors tend to hide their positions as much as possible to prevent freeloading off their ideas.

couple of important factors.

1: When Buffet buys he buys big, so can get in at better prices.

2: Timing. When they get in is not disclosed until after the fact.

That's why we don't all have their identical portfolios!

PostHeaderIcon Where can I find the book "1000 Ways To Make A Thousand Dollars" which Warren Buffet read as a kid?

A chapter is devoted to this book in Warren's biography 'the Snowball', and apparently it had a big influence on Warren's financial-savvy upbringing.

I'd like to get a hold of it, even if it is a little dated by now…

Ramesh Damani, the Nawab of Dalal Street, has a magic mantra that is going to revolutionize your investment techniques. Ramesh Damani‘s mantra is so simple that you might laugh at it. but that’s the magic of the mantra – simple but highly effective Ramesh Damani

So, what is Ramesh Damani‘s investment mantra? Ramesh Damani puts it in six simple words: INVESTORS MUST ALWAYS LOOK FOR VALUE.

Ramesh Damani built his vast investment empire on the strength of this mantra. and it has stood him in good stead in good times and in bad times. Value is the key to sustaining good returns and protecting capital says Ramesh Damani.

If you think about it, this is solid and sensible advice from one of the foremost proponents of value investing, Ramesh Damani.

Ramesh Damani‘s investment techniques says quite a bit of this investment maestro. quiet and conservative. Not given to pomp and show or flourishes.

Ramesh Damani explains his magic investment technique: Always look for shares that are beaten down in value. Always look for bargains. Always think of what the price is in relation to its value in the foreseeable future.

In this, Ramesh Damani echoes the timeless advice of that other Master of investments Warren Buffet who says that investors must always look hard and long for value and bargains. and if they look hard, they will eventually find a bargain, says Warren Buffet confidently. and when you do find the bargain, you must ACT and not procrastinate, exhorts the great investment Guru, Warren Buffet.

Ramesh Damani says that good investing is always value investing. buy wherever you see as value, says this doyen of the Indian investment world.

If you carefully analyze the stock picks of Ramesh Damani, you will see a pattern in them. Ramesh Damani has an unerring instinct to home in on shares that are not in favour at the moment but which are excellent value plays.

When Ramesh Damani talks of value; what the investment Guru is also emphasizing is that you must cover your risk, protect your downside.

If you are like us, you are skeptical and questioning. What is the proof that Ramesh Damani‘s investment mantra really works, you ask.

Well, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Lets look at a few examples to prove the point.

VIP Industries: Ramesh Damani identified VIP Industries in June 2008 when it was begging to be bought at Rs. 83. What did Ramesh Damani see in VIP Industries? well, Ramesh Damani saw an excellent promoter – Dilip Piramal, he saw a quality product (branded luggage) and he saw an unending demand for the products of VIP Industries from the urban consumer masses. Ramesh Damani was also confident that the downside was limited with VIP Industries. when Ramesh Damani exhorted investors to buy VIP Industries, his advice was met with disdain (though we acted on his advice!). well, in 24 months (July 2010), VIP Industries is quoting at Rs. 363. That makes for an appreciation of 337%!! The share has more than quadrapled!

There are so many other examples one can think of: TTK Healthcare which Ramesh Damani homed in on in at Rs. 75 and which is today quoting at Rs. 381. Hitachi Home & Life Solutions was going a-begging at Rs. 45 when the master of investments Ramesh Damani spotted it in January 2009. Since then Hitachi Home & Life Solutions has spurted to Rs. 348. Whirlpool of India is another stellar example. It was languishing at Rs. 46 in June 2009 when Ramesh Damani homed in on it. in July 2010, Whirlpool of India is quoting at Rs. 288 and every two-bit analyst now has it on his buy list!

The beauty of Ramesh Damani‘s stock picks is that they would have give you a good night’s sleep. Why, because they were VALUE PICKS. The price you paid for the shares was low – the fundamanetals were sound – so there was no reason to worry or lose sleep over Ramesh Damani‘s stock picks.

Ramesh Damani is careful to caution amateur investors that his old picks have ceased to be Value buys – thanks to the steep increase in their price. now the risk-reward ratio has turned adverse for these stellar stocks picks of Ramesh Damani.

But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t new value picks for the discerning investor. As Warren Buffet says “you must never stop looking for bargains. and if you look hard enough, you will eventually find a bargain. and when you do find a bargain, you must act“.

Ramesh Damani‘s new stock picks are in the same mould as the old ones. Let’s take a close look at a few of them:

GIC Housing Finance: At CMP Rs. 112 (the recommended price was Rs. 95) GIC Housing Finance offers an attractive dividend yield of 3.5%. GIC Housing Finance‘s 3 Yr CAGR Sales is 25.82%, Its 3 Yr CAGR Profit is 19.96% while its’ Return on Equity (ROE) is 17.20%. The PE is 9.1. plus reputed promoters and a business that is always in demand – financing house purchases – makes for a perfect value buy. can it catch up with its illustrious big brother LIC Housing Finance (CMP Rs. 996, PE 14.2)? That remains to be seen but don’t be surprised if it does!

Precision Wires India: This caught Ramesh Damani‘s eye when it was at Rs. 100 (CMP Rs. 138) for a couple of reasons. Precision Wires India was quoting at a cheap PE of 5.33, its’ then Market price of Rs. 100 was below the book value of Rs. 137. Further Precision Wires India offered a good dividend yield of 4.4%. Ramesh Damani also noted that Precision Wires India was Diversifying into wind power and this could lead to re-rating.

Ramesh Damani‘s point was that Precision Wire provided the protection of a low PE and good dividend yield and so the downside risk was nicely protected while there was tremendous potential for upside.

Ramesh Damnani has also homed in on Geometric (See Geometric: Why Ramesh Damani recommends this stock). a share that is in the doldrums presently but with excellent promoters (Adi Godrej) and strong growth prospects. will Geometric become another stellar stock pick from Ramesh Damani? only time will tell!

PostHeaderIcon How do you make money on stocks if you never sell them? Like with Warren Buffett, besides the dividends??

I understand you make money off dividends, but when someone like Warren Buffet says he likes to buy and hold forever, how does his net worth go up so much, besides it being an asset…I mean from a liquid perspective if he doesn’t sell his stocks, and ignoring dividends, how else do you make money? Is his all from Berkshire?

People are selling like crazy today in Asia. I’m not sure when this is going to end. Personally, I’m not one of the monied people out there. the markets have gone down for a year and there are all sorts of dire predictions. I heard one business person on BBC say that some people are predicting up to 50 airlines will be out of business as a result of the crisis. George Soros says this is going to get worse. I haven’t heard anything from Warren Buffet on this lately. where is it all going? Will it compound in your opinion? who can afford to buy property atthis point anyways especially all the resort properties that have been built around the world. Your thoughts?

PostHeaderIcon Should Republicans Take a Page From Warren Buffet’s Playbook?

Warren Buffet, one of the country’s most successful investors (he owns Berkshire Hathaway), just this morning announced he is buying Northern Burlington Railroad for just north of 44 Billion Dollars !

He said that “It’s a bet on the country basically.” he said he believes in the U.S. Economy, and this is his way of showing it.

Should the republicans take the same tact, instead of constantly being negative, so negative they are now known collectively as the party of NO! no new ideas, no answers, no hope.
